A Letter from the Publisher: In Defense of Dabo

As publisher of South Carolina Manufacturing, I spend my days covering businesses that understand the value of long-term vision, steady leadership, and weathering occasional setbacks. That’s why the recent criticism of Dabo Swinney troubles me.

We’ve Become Spoiled

Let’s be honest, we Clemson fans have become spoiled. The grumbling in Death Valley has grown louder after a few seasons that have fallen short. Some are questioning Swinney’s leadership, and frankly, it’s embarrassing. This criticism isn’t just premature, it’s ungrateful.

Remember Where We Came From

I’ve been watching Clemson football long enough to remember what Swinney inherited. When he took over mid-season in 2008, we were perennial underachievers, known more for inexplicable losses than championship runs. Under his guidance, the Tigers won two national championships (2016 and 2018), appeared in seven College Football Playoffs, and became a premier program.

Swinney built Clemson into a championship program. He’s earned the right to rebuild without facing constant criticism.

Character Still Matters

In my business coverage, I’ve learned that the best leaders develop people, not just profits. Swinney’s approach to developing young men extends far beyond football. His players graduate, represent our university with class, and stay out of serious trouble. In an era of constant coaching turnover and transfer portal chaos, his stability and values are assets, not liabilities.

A Manufacturing Lesson

Every manufacturer I profile understands this truth: sustained excellence requires patience over panic, long term vision over short term results. College football operates the same way. Even Alabama had down years under Nick Saban.

Dabo Swinney earned the right to work through challenges without constant second-guessing. The man who brought two national championships to Clemson deserves better than fairweather support.
